Although the purpose of an asphalt pavement slurry seal and sealcoating are similar, there are definite differences between the two. Most of the differences are related to the intended use of the asphalt pavement on which the sealant will be applied. Both types of asphalt sealing are designed and engineered for specific uses. Technically, either type could be used on any asphalt pavement surface, but the wrong type could be too much or too little. Both types are used to protect a pavement’s surface and underlying structure, so they are classified as preventive maintenance procedures. This type of preventive maintenance will increase the lifespan of the asphalt pavement and reduce the possibility of encountering major repairs. Cracks and other needed repairs must be performed before the application of either sealant.
Both slurry seals and seal coating are made from asphalt emulsions, water and additives. Slurry seals are thicker and have aggregates of a larger size added to its mix. Sealcoating uses fine-grained silica sand as an aggregate and is more fluid.
Slurry seals are most often used on heavily traveled roads and streets where vehicles of all types move at accelerated speeds. The thicker mix and larger aggregate add a wearable surface to the pavement that restores vehicle traction. Slurry seals are good for filling in minor voids and correcting raveling and other small imperfections.
Sealcoating is preferable for lightly traveled or slower traffic areas, including parking lots and driveways. The thinner, free-flowing mix is easily applied with the sprayer equipment commonly used by asphalt companies, but it can also be squeegeed into place. Sealcoating adds a new, shiny, dark cap to the pavement that is both attractive and inviting. The seal coating mixture can be adjusted to address specific requirements, including providing a non-slip surface for walkways and recreational areas, forming an aesthetically pleasing background for markings, or providing increased resistance to tire marks. Sealcoat helps protect the surface of the asphalt pavement from moisture infiltration, the damaging effects of vehicle fluids, and the damaging UV rays emitted by the sun.
Depending on usage and care, a slurry seal can last from six to 10 years. A sealcoat can last from two to six years. Most asphalt sealcoating contractors, however, advise that the quality of the sealant and the skills of the contractor’s crew members are critical if you want to achieve the longest durability possible.
Because of the additional specialized equipment needed, slurry seals are generally twice the cost of applying a sealcoating to the same area.
