Can You Trust Your Asphalt Contractor?

How Do I Choose a Reputable Asphalt Contractor?

Not all asphalt paving contractors have the same experience, commitment to customer service — or integrity. Unfortunately, like most other businesses, the industry has its share of contractors who perform shoddy work as well as a few blatant scam artists. If asphalt is not properly installed, it will not last as it should. Knowing how to choose a reputable contractor helps ensure that you will be satisfied with the work performed for many years to come.

Are they well established?

The first step in choosing a good contractor is to hire one who has an established business in your town. Never hire someone to do the job who appears at your door uninvited and claims to have material remaining from another job, and beware of “gypsy” contractors who constantly move from town to town.

Make a list of potential contractors, and then do your research. Check with the Better Business Bureau to determine each contractor’s rating. Browse the web for forums or review sites to see what kind of feedback potential contractors might have garnered. Ask contractors for local references; ask former customers questions about the overall quality of the work, the adherence to the schedule and any issues that arose before, during or after the job. Verify how long the company has operated under the same name; although there are legitimate reasons for a name change, frequent changes can indicate that the contractor made the changes to cover up a poor reputation.

Hire only contractors that are properly licensed, bonded and insured. In some jurisdictions, an unlicensed contractor cannot obtain the permits needed for your job. A bonded contractor provides you with a layer of protection from damages that might be caused in the course of the job, as does liability insurance. If the contractor has employees, he or she should also carry workers’ compensation insurance.

Get quotes in writing, and be sure to get a written contract signed by the contractor. Read the contract to ensure that it contains any verbal promises or conditions that the contractor discussed with you. The contract should detail the work that is to be done, specify the guarantee and include both a start and completion date.
